Teacher: Shakiela Younge MA (Candidate)

Tutorials: Mondays 7:00PM to 9:00PM

I consider myself to be a determined individual; even in these tough social and economic times I have endeavoured not to give up or give in to despair. I have taken my studies seriously and completed my BA degree in Literatures in English with Upper Second Class Honours in 2007. I am currently working towards obtaining my Masters degree in Post Colonial Literature. As you can tell, Literature is one of my passions. Reading is one of my favourite past times and occasionally I do some of my own writing. The subject has had an enormous impact on my life and is one of the main reasons I got into teaching in 2008. I wanted to instill my love of literature in others; I wanted to make the subject more "real" for my students. Most children see literature as an abstract subject, they question its resourcefulness in today's world. I enjoy changing their perspective. One of my other passions is drama. I sub-directed a play at the University of the West Indies while I was conducting my studies. I enjoy Aristotle, Shakespeare and even Sophocles, but it is the drama of every day life that truly captures my attention. Coupled with my own personal ideas on spirituality I believe that drama helps us to communicate with the world around us and sometimes with our inner selves. That is one of the core principles I teach my students.

My area of studies and diversified work experiences with the Tourism Product Development Company and HEART Trust National Training Agency has exposed me to different levels of administration, supervision, training, coordination and communication strategies. I am a fun loving individual who enjoys working with others, I also love to learn and I strongly believe that learning is continuous. I am dedicated and dependable and very family oriented. Owed much to the chagrin of my mother I allowed my head to wrap around the idea of going to Teachers’ College at age seventeen (17). I soon found that the vocation, teaching, offered me among other things, a great opportunity for social and intellectual interaction, and inevitably, transformation. Having fourteen (14) years of classroom experience at the Ordinary and Advanced levels (with the latter involving students from different Caribbean countries) my spectrum has broadened and I comfortably admit “I have not only been able to effect positive changes in students but they have had a profound effect on my growth and development as a person and as an educator.” Now, my classrooms have evolved into sites where self actualization is a reciprocal process and fun and excitement while learning, is a natural part of this process.

Teacher: Sharna Grandison M.Sc.

Tutorials: Mondays 4:00PM to 6:00PM

Teacher: Shakiela Younge MA (Candidate)

Tutorials: Wednesdays 7:00PM to 9:00PM
